Ah, Botulinum toxin (BT) and dermal fillers (DF), arguably the most common type sof cosmetic procedures known. They can be used for subtle corrections, fine lines or more dramatically to plump areas of the face and fill out areas that have lost volume. They can even aid in reshaping facial structures.
A lot of questions derive from these procedures due to their popularity. Below we have answered all the pressing questions about BT and DF.
DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN AND DERMAL FILLERS HURT?
It is the most common question to ask during a consultation. The needles that are used are extremely small which minimizes the pain and your practitioner will also have topical anaesthetics available to numb the area of treatment. After the procedure you might feel some discomfort from the injection sites.
CAN I HAVE AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO BT AND DF?
Some people might experience an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the dilute of BT and DF. Allergic reactions are very rare and the symptoms include:
Itching
Rash
Significant swelling
CAN I BUILD UP A RESISTANCE TO BT AND DF?
Building up an immunity to BT is a possibility but very rare. Your body can create antibodies after repeat injections that are more frequent than what is recommended. To minimise building up a resistance, only use the minimum dose required, with longer intervals between each treatment.
In regards to Dermal Fillers, your body doesn’t develop resistance but a high metabolism, heat and exercise will make them not last as long.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT TO WHEN I CAN HAVE TREATMENT?
It is recommended to be 18 or above to be treated with BT and DF. There is no particular law that is prohibiting it however most practitioners might refuse if there is no parental consent.
DO I HAVE TO LOOK AFTER MY SKIN AFTER TRETING WITH BT AND DF?
There is no real change in skincare routines after getting BT or DF. You can continue with your regular cleansers and moisturisers. These treatments are only serving to create a rejuvenated look, so it is very important to continue looking after your skin.
Your practitioner will give you recommendations on aftercare right after your treatment.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO AVOID AFTER MY TREATMENTS?
There is a recommendation to avoid certain activities right after treatment, for optimisation of your results. Strenuous exercise, excessive sun and heat exposure and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol are contraindicated for about 24 hours after the procedure.
Anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications should be avoided as best as possible, with medication and supplements like Vitamin E, Ginseng, Omega 3 and Aspirin also being on the list of ‘things to avoid’. If you have any concerns about your medications, ask your doctor before discontinuing any of them.
